I have elected to run for Selectman, instead of returning to the Legislative Council, which I have chaired for six years and served on for twelve, for three reasons. First, I desire to continue volunteering. From my days as an Eagle Scout right through my recent tour in Iraq as a Marine, civic duty has been a large part of my life. I do desire, however, to do so in a role that requires less time than my present position as Chair of the Legislative Council does. Second, it makes sense to serve in a capacity where one can contribute the most. I believe my experience on the Legislative Council, as a member for twelve years and Chair for the last six, allowed me to accumulate enough knowledge of the workings of town government and the interaction among boards to contribute as a Selectman from day one, with no need for a "learning curve" or on the job training. Finally and perhaps most importantly, I am excited to have the chance to run with Pat Llodra and support her as First Selectman. I have worked with Pat for years on the Council and respect her greatly. We communicate efficiently and complement each other's skill sets. As a team I am confident we can do great things for Newtown. In the months from Memorial Day to Election Day, I hope you will listen to our plans and goals for Newtown, and, if you like what you hear, give us your support at the polls.
